Kwanzan Cherry has double-pink, very attractive flowers and is usually purchased and planted for this reason. This is an upright, broad deciduous tree. Leaves are dense, ovate, often lobed, purple, green at maturity, up to 3 inches long. Red buds develop into deep pink flowers in spring. Fruit are deep red, shiny, approximately the size of a cherry. Grows 15 to 25 feet tall and 10 to 20 feet wide. This tree does well in most soil, but will be more attractive if fed peat and compost.

Cornus florida

The dogwood tree holds considerable value in the landscape for its ability to thrive under the canopy of larger shade trees. It is a relatively small tree, reaching about 20-25’ tall and wide in the average landscape, and is slow growing until fully established. Flowers are white and 2-3” wide, and cover the tree in mid-spring. They fade in late spring, giving way to light green leaves, which turn a stunning purple-red in the autumn. The dogwood will need some shelter from the elements, so plant amongst larger plants in the landscape or within close proximity to a permanent structure.

Magnolia x soulangiana

Saucer Magnolia is a multi-stemmed, spreading tree, and has bright, attractive gray bark. Growth rate is moderately fast but slows down considerably as the tree reaches about 20-years of age. Young trees are distinctly upright, becoming more oval, then round by 10 years of age. Large, fuzzy, green flower buds are carried through the winter at the tips of brittle branches. The blooms open in late winter to early spring before the leaves, producing large, white flowers shaded in pink, creating a spectacular flower display.

Pyrus calleryana 'Aristocrat'

The Aristocrat Pear is an improved selection of the Bradford, with wider branching angles and glossy dark green leaves with wavy edges. Flowers are white in April-May, and autumn color ranges from yellow to red.

Pyrus calleryana 'Autumn Blaze'

The draw of this improved pear is its consistent reddish purple fall color. The shape is upright pyramidal or rounded and the branches have wider angles than the Bradford, making them better able to withstand winds.

Pyrus calleryana 'Redspire'

The Redspire pear has a pyramidal form that is less stiff than the Bradford. The leaves are shiny dark green and turn more yellow than red in the autumn. This is one of the slower growing pears.

Prunus x cistena ‘Schmidtcis’

Prunus cerasifera ‘Newportii’

Newport Cherry Plum forms a rounded silhouette of dark purple foliage. The new leaves unfold as light bronze-purple but quickly change to red or red-purple. ‘Newport’ Cherry Plum has pale bluish-pink springtime flowers which are followed by one-inch diameter, dull purple fruits. It is said to be one of the hardiest purple-leaved plums.

Cercis Canadensis

The redbud is a great tree to add a splash of color under the canopy of larger trees. New growth emerges reddish purple and changes to a dark green. Autumn color is greenish-yellow or strong yellow. Showy flowers bloom in March - April, reddish purple in the bud (hence the name) opening to a rosy pink. This tree performs well in full sun or light shade and is more slow growing than other trees.

Cercis canadensis

‘Forest Pansy’ Eastern Redbud is a moderate to rapid-grower, 20 to 30 feet in height, which has red twigs and beautiful, shimmering, purple/red new leaves, which fade to purple/green during the summer in its southern range. The splendid, purple/pink flowers appear all over the tree in spring, just before the leaves emerge. ‘Forest Pansy’ Eastern Redbud has an irregular growth habit when young but forms a graceful, flat-topped, vase shape as it gets older. The tree usually branches low on the trunk, and if left intact forms a graceful multi-trunked habit.

Amelanchier laevis

The Allegheny Serviceberry, extremely liked by many birds and animals, grows distinct purple/bronze leaves. The main ornamental feature is the white flowers blooming in mid-spring. The Serviceberry grows purplish blackberries that are quickly eaten by birds. The fall color is yellow to red.
